This little painting has a big personality with loads of detailed textures and mixed colors painted to achieve it's weathered look. The sign is part of a set with the Ranch Motel signage in San Antonio. The motel was boarded up, possibly for renovation, possibly to demolish. Whatever it is, the signage is something to behold.
This was a first time I painted on cradled board, but I found that by doing some underpainting that I could build up some surface texture of brush strokes before painting the actual image. The outcome was fresh so I'll be using that technique in the future.
I exhibited the painting for the first time when I was invited to fill a time slot for the Cultural Activities Center in Temple, TX. It sold immediately, so the original is being enjoyed by a collector. Fortunately prints can be ordered in multiple sizes to suit your space.
