This was a fun painting to do. This is actually a piece of the roofline at the Chick-Inn which is in the middle of a neighborhood in Ypsilanti, MI. I used to live nearby and always loved how authentic this little drive-in was. Signage is original and faded, but the shakes and food are fantastic. So, capturing a little slice of this 1950s drive up with the neon still intact is something I have wanted to do for a while. Capturing the fading, the lighting, the colors in watercolor gives it a fresh quality to it. I decided to contrast it with wispy clouds and blue patches of sky.
One of the things I consider important even with these smaller works is the name. I know it’s not a movie venue, but I still relate this drive in with the song for intermission “Let’s All go to the Lobby” because what is it without a little fun?
