I like old or antique things. They have a history, and sometimes the patina from its use is so much more interesting than what the object does. I ran across a seller at a flea market one day that was meticulous about displaying their old tools and fishing rods to sell. The arrangements were on pieces of plywood. I could not resist the wonderful textures, shapes, and interesting objects in each arrangement. It has taken me a long time to finally dive into painting this one, but I do love how it turned out. Each time I went back into my studio to work on it, I felt like I wasn’t sure where the painting was and the actual plywood of the stretching board was. These old things do tell stories, if we only knew what wonderful things the people made with these tools or how they used them. We’ll just have to imagine.
